Serendipity

Serendipity means an unplanned, fortunate discovery. The notion of serendipity is a common occurrence throughout the history of scientific innovation. Examples are Alexander Fleming’s accidental discovery of penicillin in 1928, the invention of the microwave oven by Percy Spencer in 1945, and the invention of the Post-it note by Spencer Silver in 1968 [Wikipedia]. More recently, the graphene tape method, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, blue LED, and etc. in Material’s Science. There have been numerous scientific advances and innovations that are made serendipitously.

Many scientists work very hard day and night throughout their careers; however, the ‘Serendipity’ does not come often. Perhaps, it is the nature of Science. However, one thing clear is the scientific ‘Serendipity’ occurs to those who are smart, creative, diligent and patient. In order to acknowledge and celebrate the ‘Serendipity’ in the Material’s Science, the ‘CCMR Serendipity Award’ is be created.
